Job Description: Join UChicago Medicine as a Nursing Support Assistant in our Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit.

With the leadership of the Manager and the Clinical Supervisor, the Nursing Support Assistant(CNA) performs assigned supportive work in connection with the delivery of patient care, including functional tasks and skills.UChicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital located in Hyde Park, is a state-of-the-art 172-bed hospital dedicated to caring for infants, children, teens and young adults.Offering a range of services from general care to groundbreaking treatments for the most complex medical conditions, Comer Children’s is home to the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center on Chicago’s South Side.Comer 6 holds twenty-nine licensed beds for hematology, oncology, stem cell transplant/immunosuppressed patients and other medical or surgical patients; cardiac telemetry unit, heart station/echocardiograms, minor procedures room, palliative care suite, play area, family kitchen and conference room.The Nursing Support Assistant will perform activities which support the daily functions and operations of a patient care unit and the healthcare team.

They will provide constant observation and documentation of activity of assigned patient and work under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the assigned area.Essential Job FunctionsProvides basic patient care activities including vital signs, enemas and basic tests such as glucoscan, hemacult and multistixAssists patients with activities of daily living, as appropriate/assigned, using proper aseptic, isolation, and infection control techniques in performance of dutiesAssists patients with personal hygiene, ambulation and nourishment/fluidsCompletes procedures as assigned, such as collecting patient specimens and weighing patients.Assists with discharge and transfer preparation of patientsAssists in the maintenance of the patient environment: makes patient beds, tidies patient room, and prepares patient room for admission and transferAssists with the maintenance of supplies/equipment and the environment.Communicates and accurately documents activities onto the proper records or logsInitiates CPR and calls a Dr.

CartPerforms receptionist duties for assigned area as requestedRequired QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalentMust be listed on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR) as an Illinois CNA OR a nursing student who has passed the written competency exam and is listed on the HCWR.CPR/BLS CertificationAbility to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform variety of tasks without direct supervision and perform duties requiring continuous physical effortAbility to effectively communicate verbally and/or in written formAbility to work in partnership with management and staffOccasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.Moderate to extreme physical effort such as walking, standing, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects and/or patients may be requiredVision, hearing, and sense of touch must be adequate to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate oral communicationFrequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputsAlertness and careful attention to detail is required to avoid injuryPosition DetailsFull Time (.9 FTE)Day Shift, 7a-7p, alternating weekend requirementUnit/Department: Comer 6CBA Code: 743 Service and MaintenanceMust comply with UCMCs COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment.
