Job Summary
Under the direction of a radiologist, performs sonography procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment with ingenuity to apply prescribed sonography for diagnosis. Assumes responsibility for designated areas of procedures as required. May have individual responsibility for specified sonography procedures and/or may be assigned as an instructor.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Verifies physician’s orders in EPIC, prescription and on schedule.
- Selects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications.
- Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examinations.
- Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure – makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
- Enters test data and patient information into computer and ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
- Follows work flow for EPIC/PACS.
- Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
- Produces images of internal organs and records diagnostic data on PACS
- Utilizes all functions of the ultrasound machine including the calculations package.
- Uses Trophon per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Appropriately uses Clickview to write up ultrasound studies.
- Schedules patients to provide orderly flow of procedures through department.
- Maintains a clean and orderly suite for each procedure.
- Notifies supervisor of malfunction in equipment to assure its proper use during patient care.
- Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer’s instruction.
- Has knowledge of hospital policies and the functions of other departments.
Education Requirements
Required: High school graduate or equivalent; Satisfactory completion of formal sonography training through an accredited sonography program; Experience necessary
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Required: ARDMS certified or ARDMS certification within 2 years of hire
