Program Director

= Dramatists Guild Foundation (DGF) is a national charity that fuels the future of American theater by supporting the writers who create it.

DGF fosters playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists at all stages of their careers.

We sponsor educational programs; provide awards, grants, and stipends; offer free space to create new works; and give emergency aid to writers in need.

By supporting and nurturing the creators of today, we protect the stories of tomorrow.

In 2021, DGF is undergoing a strategic planning process that is reexamining our purpose and strategy.

In addition, the DGF Staff are implementing anti-oppression practices in all aspects of the organization, including identifying and challenging oppressive characteristics of typical work culture.

The Program Director will have a large role in supporting the Executive Director in this ongoing and permanent process to ensure that staff and writers engaged in our programming are supported.

Position Summary:

DGF Program Director will lead, develop and mobilize a team of Programs staff to implement DGF’s services to the theater writing community.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Program Director oversees all aspects of program quality, delivery, and implementation.

The Program Director drives program strategy and activities, and works with the Executive Director and leadership team to deepen the organization’s impact.

The Program Director is skilled in relationship-building, program evaluation, and creative problem solving.

We just moved into a new office and expect to have the office furnished and officially open by January 2022 (estimate).

DGF has a generous Work From Home policy for after the office opens, however, since this is a leadership role involved in overseeing on site programs, 60
– 80% of their work time is on site when the office opens.

The DGF Office is ADA accessible.

Salary :

$80,000+ annually

Benefits and Perks:

• Health, dental, and vision insurance (after 30 days), with premiums covered 100% by DGF for the employee and one spouse, domestic partner, or dependent

• Life insurance for the employee (after 30 days)

• 401K with 3% employer contributions (after 1 year)

• 6 weeks of paid time off annually, prorated to start date (after 30 days), Federal Holidays off, 3 flexible holidays for religious and cultural observances, and additional time off as a team at the discretion of the Executive Director

• Stipend of $150 per month while DGF is remote-based in order to help cover cell phone and internet expenses

• Occasional free theater tickets and access to purchase house seats if available

• Eligibility for annual performance-based bonus of up to 7% of salary rate, prorated to start date.

Bonus not guaranteed.

Primary Duties Include:

• Develop existing and new programs to support dramatists in the way they want to be supported, by engaging with dramatists directly to center DGF’s goals on their needs

• Work collaboratively as part of the organization’s leadership team to develop DGF’s next strategic plan

• Act as a thought leader in the community and on the leadership team at DGF with both the staff and Board

• Build and sustain relationships with organizational peers, partners, and the writing and theatrical community

• Creatively approach support methods for beneficiaries by building meaningful relationships with the individuals served by the organization

• Lead, manage and motivate Programs team to work collaboratively in delivering high quality programs to the national theater writing community

• Generate and monitor annual departmental goals and budgets in collaboration with Executive Director and Program Manager(s)

• Work with Director of Operations and Finance to develop and implement operational policies and job descriptions for programs’ contractors

• Create, oversee, and implement evaluative systems to assess program efficacy and effectiveness

• Develop, implement, and evaluate pilot programming in response to community needs

• Partner effectively with Development and Communication Departments to ensure program alignment and support outreach needs

• Set clear goals, delegate, and provide growth opportunities for Programs staff while supporting progress along the way

• Work closely with Program Manager(s) in proposing and implementing updates/improvements to existing programs

• Collaborate in organizational and programmatic anti-oppression efforts, actively working to remove racism and oppression in the work environment, community engagement, and program offerings

Other Specific Duties include:

• Building Committees of the Board and/or community members as necessary to support Programs

• Leading or delegating leadership of those Committees within Programs

• Presenting at Board and Committee meetings

• Engaging with the team in matters outside of administration; keeping up to date with ongoings in all departments

• Partnering closely with the Executive Director on various administrative matters

• Using  to manage projects and communicate with the Staff

• Attending occasional in-person and virtual work events (often evening); conversing with beneficiaries, donors, and Board Members

Qualifications and Skills Required:

• 5-10 years of management experience, building sustainable and inclusive programs

• Putting beneficiaries
– in DGF’s case, dramatists
– at the center of decision making and strategy

• Solution-oriented

• Excellent communication skills

• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and handle complicated situations

• Experience in artistic programming and/or granting programs required

• Experience building partnerships with other organizations

• Experience collaborating across departments toward common goals

• Experience hiring, training, and managing an effective team

• Proven experience managing multiple, high-priority tasks at once

• Experience creating and implementing evaluative measures and assessing program efficacy on an ongoing basis

• Working knowledge of the national theater community

• Experience with Google Drive and monday.com a plus
